Nkiru

Educational Therapist

MA, ET

Hello, my name is Nkiru! Since I was a child, I have aspired to be an educator for students who present with various learning abilities. As such, I have completed two credential programs at CSUN: Multi-Subject and Education Specialist. I also have my Master’s in Educational Therapy.

In my early career, I have worked as a Resource Specialist and Special Day Class Teacher. Through these positions, I have gained experience in working with students who have learning differences as well as in all areas of the IEP process. In addition to my resource duties, I have collaborated with and provided consultation to general educators, providers, administrators, and parents on improvement strategies for our students and their diverse learning profiles.

My goal when working with students is to identify their unique learning needs, address those needs intensively and in a targeted way, and guide them in attaining their full potential. I apply Vygotsky’s Zone of Proximal Development practices to meet children where they are and gradually reduce support as they gain autonomy.

My teaching philosophy is also grounded in the Universal Design for Learning. Every student has the right to learn, and CAN learn when provided with the right fit in support. I focus on making informed decisions about practices that benefit the varying learning abilities in my classroom. I further believe in Culturally Responsive Teaching. My aim in the classroom is to create an environment that affirms and appreciates students’ cultures of origin. As the daughter of a Nigerian immigrant, I believe that my perspectives and worldviews contribute to my diverse approach to various topics. Understanding my own cultural, educational, and knowledge diversity has increased my responsiveness and openness to others’ ways of thinking. Although I have often been a minority in various environments, I have sought to understand, connect with, blend into, and respect the differences and similarities around me.

All the experience and education I mentioned above are utilized to support students both in and out of the classroom, with transferable skill building, and which promote academic success. My mission is to make learning enjoyable for everyone. I am grateful to live my dream, and I appreciate every student who enters my life. I hope to help them achieve their dreams as well.
