Kory

Learning Specialist & Executive Functioning Coach

MA

Hello there! My name is Kory, and I am an Education Specialist and Executive Functioning Coach working primarily in Los Angeles with all ages. I am a happy transplant from the suburbs of Chicago, Illinois. I have a Master of Arts Degree in Linguistics from the University of South Carolina and received my bachelor’s degree in film & Video from Columbia College Chicago.

After 16 years in the motion picture industry working on movies, television, and commercials I realized that what I was really interested in was how language works, human communication, and helping people struggle less. I left the movie business for graduate school where I focused on psycholinguistics and pragmatics, and taught college level English Composition and Rhetoric where I really fell in love with teaching. After graduate school I found a real home working one-on-one in reading, math remediation, and executive functioning coaching with students who have various learning profiles. I have many years of experience working with people who struggle with ADHD, ASD, Auditory Processing Disorder, Dyslexia, Dysgraphia, Dyscalculia and more.

I am trained in a variety of remediation programs including Lindamood-Bell Learning Processes,’ Seeing Stars, Visualizing and Verbalizing, On Cloud Nine, Talkies, and Orton-Gillingham. I know the importance of collaboration and differentiation for and with students, and know that is why I value the ongoing opportunity to work with students as an educational specialist and executive functioning coach.

My graduate degree in linguistics supports my understanding of language-based learning differences and creating a support plan. As an educational specialist, and executive functioning coach, I work with students one-on-one and regularly read and interpret testing reports, conduct informal assessments, address remedial math, reading and writing needs, and communicate with parents and any therapists, educators and faculty that may be part of a student’s support team. I can also support elementary math, and history through the high school level, and English Composition and Rhetoric at college level. In addition to my work in education, I practice regular yoga and meditation (I taught Yoga and meditation for 2 years), and am an artist working in clay, block-printing, surface design, and writing.

I look forward to meeting you and seeing how I might be able to help – I believe everything we will do is part of what makes our lives better and that it is all a practice. I will collaborate with you as a partner who will teach, engage, play, practice, and strengthen skills.
