Karla

Learning Specialist & Executive Functioning Coach

My name is Karla, and I am a dedicated mathematics educator with 20 years of experience helping students unlock their full potential. I believe that every student can succeed in math given the right tools and support. I built my career around creating inclusive, accessible, and empowering learning environments and activities. I currently teach middle school math in a public charter Waldorf school under the Los Angeles Unified School District. I have also taught elective classes such as Newspaper and Math Intervention. In addition, I have more than a decade of high school teaching experience in the Los Angeles County of Education. I create effective instructional programs by targeting individual learning gaps to meet the needs of all learners.

I graduated with the degree of Bachelor of Secondary Education Major in Mathematics, and I have some graduate units in Master’s in Mathematics Education from California State University Long Beach. I have cleared my Single Subject California Teaching Credential in Mathematics; and I also obtained a Cross- Cultural, Language and Academic Development Credential. I have been an active member of the math curriculum team in the high school and middle school levels, overseeing the math department’s curriculum and instruction. I have been a lead teacher in both middle and high school levels. I collaborate closely with families, special education teams, and other educators to ensure my students receive consistent and compassionate support.

I am trained in multi-sensory teaching methods, differentiated instruction and regularly incorporate strategies designed to support diverse learners. These learners include those with learning challenges, dyscalculia, at-risk students, neurodiverse students, ADHD, IEP’s, 504 plans, EL learners, and GATE students. I specialize in guiding students to improve their organization, time management, task initiation, and self-regulation. I am structured yet flexible, allowing for personalized pacing, scaffolding support, and frequent use of visual and hands-on learning tools. I use evidence-based strategies, strengths-based perspectives and teach students how to break down overwhelming tasks, set realistic goals, manage distractions, and build routines that work for their unique learning styles. I am known for my patience, creativity, and commitment to building students’ confidence along with their math skills. Whether through a whole class, small-group instruction, one-on-one intervention, or assistive technology integration, I make math meaningful and manageable for all learners.

My goal is not only helping students understand math but to help them believe in themselves as capable problem-solvers.
